Hi Uhu,

you are kidding me. Saphire was not my first and favorite selection, because the bottom of this rock does not fit to this origin.

What hardness showed your measuring exactly? And what refraction index?

I should have trusted to the growth structure of the bottom. That signs to a genuine in a cluster or geode. And the most Amethysts are twins.

So I return to my first selection.

The seller does not accept that it is possible to find a true RI on the plane of a rough crystal.
When I tell You the values I found I am sure You will say game is over, puzzle is solved.

the dealer wrote he identified the rough by using "audubon society field guide....". I don't know it - and now I would not trust in this book...

Where are our gemmologists and geologists?
Who owns true natural Alexandrite rough and cut? (I do).
Who took pictures of Alexandrite vs Amethyst on different light?
What do you think about the article www.natural alexandrite gemstone guide?

i checked the stone in your online shop. There the stone is described as green/blue. I believe you.
Colors of stones on pictures taken by a camera are a difficult matter...

If I make a color adjustment at the background to white, the amethyste has no color changing at all.

thanks for making effort - a good idea!

The RI I found is 1,54.. to 1,55.. . The dichroscope shows violet only, no green in any direction.
So I think the "stranger" is Amethyst of the quartz family.

Who is the winner? I think it is Lis finding out crystal system and the marks typical for quartz - and that without instruments. Bravo!

it was offered as Alexandrite. I was curious but did not believe the offer was correct. When i had the rough in hands i was sure it was quartz. Now i looked for a way to show that without damaging the stone. So i had a long lasting discussion with the dealer.
He does not go on offering Alexeandrite rough....

Wir können jetzt wieder Deutsch schreiben.
Danke an alle, die das Spielchen mitgemacht haben. Für mich war es sehr lehrreich.
